RSS(0) Groundbreaking construction training scheme goes countywide

Tresham College is now working with Construction Futures, a pioneering training scheme which provides practical construction training for local young people.

The innovative scheme is the first in the UK to link construction training with the determination of planning applications. It enables local people to directly benefit from new development, learn new skills and gain vital work experience.

Construction Futures is managed by West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) and is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

It has already been very successful in the west of Northamptonshire, with over 160 weeks of training delivered on sites across Northampton and Daventry. The programme is expanding quickly and is attracting interest from the construction industry nationwide. Thanks to the new partnership with Tresham College, students from Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough are set to benefit.

Construction students will get hands-on experience in a wide array of trades, ranging from bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing and electrical to skills such as civil engineering, project management, design and surveying.

WNDC Chief Executive, Peter Mawson said: “Construction Futures is a real success story for the area and I’m delighted that even more students throughout Northamptonshire will now start to benefit from the scheme. It gives students the chance to put what they have learned on their course into practice and gain vital work experience.
“We have big plans for Construction Futures and eventually think it could help young people throughout the UK take their first steps into the construction industry.”

Tony Joyce Head of School for Construction at Tresham College said: “Tresham College is delighted to be involved in such an innovative project which will have great benefits to our Construction learners and the Construction industry itself.

“To be able to provide and support students undertaking College based construction training with real and relevant work experience with major construction developers is something that will help and support the students in the development of their career.

“It will also provide opportunities for apprenticeships and in raising the much needed skills and workforce as the economic situation recovers”

Construction Futures works through WNDC’s development control powers. It identifies and agrees the training opportunities on new developments when it considers planning applications. It then works with Moulton College, and now Tresham College to provide trainees once construction starts. The whole process is embedded in the s106 agreements tied to planning permissions

As well as securing work training placements, Construction Futures provides careers advice and construction site visits for local college students. It also helps construction firms to up-skill their existing workforce by providing specialist training and advice.
