The first Construction Futures trainee has started work on Northampton’s much anticipated boating marina. Laura Davies, 18, from Far Cotton is participating in a 4 week placement on the site and will be followed by a series of other local students.
Established in 2009, Construction Futures is a groundbreaking scheme, which provides practical training for local people on new developments across Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. As part of a formal college course, it enables local people to learn new skills and gain vital work experience.
The first Construction Futures trainees started on the iCon development in Daventry last year. Laura is the first trainee to be placed in Northampton.
Laura said:
“I’m really enjoying my time on the site, it’s great to get hands on experience and see how a busy construction site works. The marina is a really interesting project and I think it will be a big boost for Northampton when it’s finished.”
Laura is working with Jacksons who are the contractors for the development. She is the first female to work on the marina and certainly isn’t daunted by the challenge.
“I don’t think construction is seen as just a man’s job anymore. There are around seven girls like me on my course. My long term ambition is to go into business with my friend. She is also studying construction at Moulton College and we like the idea of being our own bosses one day”
Construction Futures has been established by West Northamptonshire Development Corporation in partnership with Mouton College, Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited, and Northamptonshire County Council.
